🗓 The Importance of Follow-Up Appointments After Ear Tubes
When the surgery is over, it’s tempting to breathe a sigh of relief and think, “We’re done.” But in reality, the follow-up visits are just as important as the surgery itself — especially for our neuro kids.
Why Follow-Ups Matter
- Checking Tube Position
Ear tubes are tiny, and sometimes they shift, get clogged, or even fall out early. The ENT uses a special light to see if the tube is still in place and working. - Monitoring for Infection
Even with tubes, infections can still happen. A follow-up helps catch them before they cause bigger problems. - Hearing Tests
Some ENTs will test hearing during these visits to make sure your child is getting the benefit of clearer sound. This is huge for speech progress. - Timing Tube Removal
Most tubes fall out on their own after 6–18 months. If they stay too long, the ENT may need to remove them to prevent damage.
What Happens at the Appointment
- The ENT looks inside the ear with a small microscope.
- If there’s wax blocking the tube, they may gently remove it.
- They check for redness, swelling, or fluid.
- You can ask about water safety, school activities, and any changes you’ve noticed in your child’s behavior or hearing.
Parent Tip
Put the ENT’s follow-up dates in your phone calendar the same day you leave the office. Skipping even one can mean missing early signs of problems.
