When my daughter was first diagnosed, I was overwhelmed. Therapies, doctor visits, special equipment — it all added up so quickly. I remember sitting at my kitchen table late one night, wondering how we were going to manage it all.
That’s when another mom told me, “Get her on the Texas Medicaid Waiver list now. Don’t wait.”
I had no idea what she meant, but that conversation changed everything.
What I Learned About Medicaid Waiver Programs in Texas
Texas has special programs called Medicaid waivers. They help children and adults with disabilities get services that allow them to live and thrive at home instead of in an institution.
Some of the main ones are:
- CLASS – Community Living Assistance and Support Services
- HCS – Home and Community-Based Services
- MDCP – Medically Dependent Children Program
- TxHmL – Texas Home Living
- DBMD – Deaf-Blind Multiple Disabilities
The catch? The wait lists are long. Sometimes years. That’s why starting early is so important.
How We Got on the List
One morning, coffee in hand, I called 1-877-438-5658 — that’s the number for the STAR+PLUS waiver interest list. I told them my daughter’s information and asked to be added to every waiver she might qualify for.
Then I called our Local Intellectual and Developmental Disability Authority (LIDDA). They were kind, explained the process, and made sure her name was on the lists for CLASS, HCS, and TxHmL too.
Now, once a year, I call back to confirm she’s still on the list — because if you miss that call, you can lose your spot.
Why It Matters
When our name finally comes up, these waivers could cover therapies, respite care, and even equipment — the kind of help that lets my daughter stay home, be part of our community, and keep her smile.
If you have a child with disabilities in Texas, I’m telling you from experience: call today. The wait might be long, but your future self will thank you.
