What Are Texas Education Freedom Accounts?
The Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program is a Texas education savings account program beginning with the 2026–27 school year.
The program is administered by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, with Odyssey operating the program portal for families.
The official TEFA website says that more than 100,000 students were awarded funding for the 2026–27 school year.

The application period for the 2026–27 school year is now closed. The official website states that applications are no longer being accepted for this inaugural program year.
How Much Money Can a Student Receive?
The amount depends on the student’s situation and educational setting.
For students participating through the homeschool/other category, the award can be $2,000 per year.
Students attending participating private schools may receive substantially more, and students with qualifying disabilities and an eligible IEP may qualify for additional funding.
According to the official TEFA information, a private-school student without a qualifying current IEP may receive $10,474, while a qualifying student with a current IEP may receive up to $30,000, depending on the statutory funding formula and other requirements.
This is important:
The funding belongs to the student—not to a particular school or vendor.
Families have the ability to decide where eligible TEFA funds are spent.
Can TEFA Funds Be Used for Therapy?
Yes, certain educational therapies can qualify.

If the provider is not currently participating, parents can ask the provider whether they are willing to apply to become a TEFA provider/vendor.

Does the Therapy Provider Have to Register?
If you want to purchase a therapy service through the TEFA Marketplace, the provider needs to participate in the TEFA program and have an eligible offering available through the Marketplace.
That means a parent should not simply ask:
“Does your clinic accept TEFA?”
Instead, ask:
“Are you an approved TEFA provider/vendor, and is your specific therapy service listed as an eligible offering in the TEFA Marketplace?”
That distinction can save parents a lot of confusion.
What Is the Odyssey Marketplace?
Odyssey is the platform used by TEFA families to manage their accounts and access eligible purchases.
The official TEFA website explains that the Marketplace is available for families who have received funding. Parents can log into their Odyssey account and use their wallet to pay tuition and make eligible purchases.
The Marketplace may include different types of eligible educational products and services.
Depending on the student’s eligibility and program rules, offerings can include things such as:

Parents should always check the current Marketplace and program rules before making a purchase.
Why Does My Account Say I Was Awarded $2,000 But Show $0 Available?
This is something parents should pay close attention to.
There is an important difference between:

Available funds.
Seeing an award does not necessarily mean the money is immediately available for every purchase.
The timing of funding can depend on the student’s educational setting, enrollment confirmation, funding schedule, and other program requirements.
For example, TEFA explains that participating private-school students receive funding in quarterly installments.
If your Odyssey account shows:
Award: $2,000
but also:
Available funds: $0
and you have not used the money, do not assume that you lost the award.
Instead, check your Odyssey account for any pending steps and contact Odyssey support for an explanation of your individual account.
What If I Have a Disability or IEP?
This is another area where parents need to pay attention.
A current IEP can affect TEFA priority and, for qualifying students attending participating private schools, can affect the amount of special education funding.
The official TEFA website explains that a student must have a current IEP on file with the state to qualify for the additional special education funding available under the program.
The program also explains that some families had problems because an IEP could not initially be located electronically in the state’s records.
Families who believe their child’s IEP should have been located can appeal.
What If My Child’s IEP Wasn’t Found?

No.

If you are hoping to use TEFA funds for ABA therapy, you can send your provider this message:
“I received Texas Education Freedom Account funding and would like to see if I can use my TEFA funds toward my child’s ABA services. Are you currently an approved TEFA provider/vendor? If not, would your organization be willing to apply through the TEFA provider/vendor process so eligible ABA services can potentially be offered through the Marketplace?”
